Line shopping: same bet, better price
Why the same bet pays differently at different sportsbooks, and how checking a few books adds up over a season.
Sportsbooks don't all charge the same price. On a given game, one book might have a team at +120 while another has them at +110. It's the same bet with the same outcome; only the payout differs. Line shopping is simply checking several books and taking the best price.
Why prices differ
Each book sets its own prices based on its customers, its risk and how quickly it reacts to news and to sharper markets. Some books shade popular sides. Some are slower to move. The result is a small spread of prices on almost every market.
How much it matters
A few cents of price per bet looks tiny. Across a season of bets, it compounds: the same set of bets returns more at better prices when they come in, and loses the same stake when they don't. That's why serious bettors keep accounts at several books. Try our line-shopping calculator to see what it has been worth at your volume, based on our own price history.
What it doesn't do
A better price doesn't make a bet more likely to come in. It changes the payout, not the result. You can still lose money on any bet.
